Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of the state of Odisha. He has been serving as the Chief Minister since 2000 and is the longest-serving Chief Minister in the history of Odisha. Naveen Patnaik was born on October 16, 1946, in Cuttack, Odisha, to Biju Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik.
Naveen Patnaik belonged to a politically influential family. His father, Biju Patnaik, was a renowned politician and a former Chief Minister of Odisha. However, Naveen Patnaik did not initially show an interest in politics. He completed his education abroad and worked in the United States for several years.
In 1997, Naveen Patnaik’s father, Biju Patnaik, passed away. This event proved to be a turning point in Naveen Patnaik’s life. He decided to enter politics and carry forward his father’s legacy. In 1997, he formed the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party, named after his father, with the aim of serving the people of Odisha.
In the year 2000, Naveen Patnaik contested the state assembly elections from the Hinjili constituency in Ganjam district of Odisha and won with a significant majority. Following the victory, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Odisha, succeeding Giridhar Gamang. Since then, he has been re-elected as Chief Minister in subsequent elections held in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
As Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik has focused on various developmental initiatives and welfare programs for the people of Odisha.
